Khan Academy: rebuild a shaky foundation one skill at a time

A focused practice routine helps learners identify the missing step behind a difficult topic.

Khan Academy

Khan Academy is a nonprofit learning platform offering free educational resources, with a strong emphasis on building understanding and practising skills. It can be useful when a learner needs another explanation or wants to revisit an earlier concept. The best starting point is often the exact step that causes confusion, rather than the most advanced topic on the syllabus.

Find the missing step in a maths problem

Take a fraction problem you could not solve. Before replaying an explanation, label the exact obstacle: common denominator, multiplication or interpreting the question. Practise that component, then attempt a different problem without the video. Keep a two-column error log containing your original step and the correction. This makes the next session about a specific skill rather than repeating an entire lesson. Avoid treating a single correct answer as proof that the underlying method is secure.

Watching an explanation is only the beginning

Course organisation and language coverage vary, so compare the material with your own curriculum. A practice score should guide revision rather than become a label for ability. For younger learners, agree on an achievable session length and discuss mistakes calmly. One accurately explained solution is more informative than a long streak achieved by guessing or repeatedly using hints.

Pause and try it

A learner keeps making errors with fractions. Should they repeat harder exercises or inspect an easier example first?

Reveal a possible approach

Inspect an easier example and identify the first uncertain step. Revisit that prerequisite, then return to a new problem at the original level to see whether the explanation transfers.
