WordPress.org: plan a small publishing site before choosing plugins

Start with the reader’s tasks and a maintenance plan, then decide which features your website actually needs.

WordPress.org

WordPress is open-source publishing software supported by a large community. WordPress.org provides information and resources for the project. It can suit a reader who wants to build a publication or information site, but choosing software is only one part of running a website responsibly.

Plan the publishing work after installation

Sketch a simple book-review site with an article, an author page and a contact route before choosing a theme. Decide who will update software, keep backups and approve comments. Add plugins only when they solve a named requirement; every addition creates another thing to maintain. On a staging copy, test how an article looks on a phone and how you would restore it after an accidental deletion. Separate software choice from the ongoing cost and responsibility of operating the site.

Hosting and maintenance still need an owner

For a self-hosted installation, include hosting, backups, updates and account security in your plan. Distinguish the open-source project from separate hosted services with similar branding. Check current documentation when installing or changing features. Keep a copy of your content and test recovery, because a backup you cannot restore offers little reassurance. A smaller site that remains readable and maintained is more useful than an elaborate one with broken features.

Pause and try it

You want to add five plugins before publishing your first article. What should you ask about each one?

Reveal a possible approach

Name the visitor need it serves, the data it handles and who will maintain it. If the benefit is unclear, postpone installation until a real requirement appears.
