Ghost: think through an independent publication before launching it
Define your publishing rhythm and reader relationship before choosing how to host a newsletter-led website.
Ghost
Ghost is an open-source publishing platform developed by a nonprofit organisation. It offers software for independent publishing and a managed Ghost(Pro) service. It is relevant to writers considering a dedicated publication, but the first decision should be editorial: what readers will receive and why they would return.
Design the reader’s route from post to newsletter
For a monthly reading letter, draft one public introduction and one complete issue before configuring subscriptions. Decide what a visitor can read without joining and what a subscriber should expect by email. Check the sign-up, confirmation and unsubscribe journey with your own test address. If you plan paid content, review the current hosting and payment requirements separately. The first useful outcome is a clear publishing promise you can keep, not a complicated membership structure with little material behind it.
Publishing software does not create an audience
Compare the current hosting options, costs and operational responsibilities on the provider’s site. If you plan email delivery or paid memberships, inspect the relevant configuration and terms before announcing them. Exportability and access to your data are useful questions to ask, but you still need backups and clear subscriber expectations. Avoid promising an ambitious paid schedule until you have demonstrated that you can maintain it.

Pause and try it
Your newsletter promise is “interesting things every day.” How could you make it more useful and sustainable?
Reveal a possible approach
Define a topic, reader and manageable frequency: for example, one carefully explained reading idea each week. A specific promise helps readers decide whether to subscribe and helps you decide what to write.
