calibre: organise an ebook collection before it becomes unsearchable

Use consistent metadata and a small tagging system to find the books you already have permission to read.

calibre

calibre is a free, open-source ebook manager with tools for organising metadata, viewing books and working with supported formats. It can help readers whose files are scattered across folders or devices. The first useful task is usually cleaning up the collection, not converting every file at once.

Clean a small ebook library first

Start with a handful of ebooks you are entitled to use. Compare author names, titles and language fields, then correct obvious inconsistencies before importing a much larger collection. Send one suitable file to your reading device and check navigation, italics and chapter breaks. If a converted file looks wrong, retain the original and investigate the format rather than repeating conversions blindly. Keep separate editions distinguishable, especially when they contain different translations or illustrations.

File conversion cannot supply missing rights

Work only with books and documents you are authorised to use, and respect restrictions that apply to them. Conversion does not create a right to redistribute a work. Back up the library and consult the current manual before moving its files or connecting new devices. A tidy catalogue should reduce the time spent searching and leave more time for reading.

Pause and try it

A converted book opens, but its chapter navigation is broken. Is the conversion ready to replace your original file?

Reveal a possible approach

Keep the original. Test the table of contents, chapter boundaries and any illustrations before relying on the converted copy; successful opening alone does not prove a usable result.
