Bookshop.org: make a reading list that supports independent booksellers
Choose a book by edition, reading purpose and bookseller, rather than buying the first cover that appears in a search.
Bookshop.org
Bookshop.org is an online bookselling platform built around supporting independent bookshops. Its shop selector and curated lists provide two useful starting points: a bookseller you already trust, or a subject you want to explore. It suits readers who want an online purchase to remain connected to the independent book trade.
Match the book club’s edition
Imagine your club chooses a translated novel. One listing is a paperback with a translator named; another is an ebook with a similar cover. Build a comparison with three fields: translator, ISBN and format. Ask the group which differences matter before ordering. If everyone already owns a different edition, agree to cite chapters rather than page numbers. This avoids buying another copy solely to match a cover.
A shop selection is not a stock reservation
Check the regional storefront, delivery destination and final order total on the provider’s site. Do not assume that a bookseller listed on the platform has the same stock available for immediate collection in its physical shop. A short, deliberate shortlist is often more useful than an enormous wish list that never becomes a reading plan.

Pause and try it
You find the right title in two editions. Which details would you compare before buying it for a book club?
Reveal a possible approach
Compare ISBN, translator where relevant, format and pagination. Matching the group’s edition can make page references easier; otherwise agree to use chapter references.
